where it started.

Starting out in the print industry in the late 1990's, I started out hand numbering invoice books (remember them) with a stamp and then perforating with a slicer. Working in a small agency I began learning the graphic design trade by redrawing customer's logos into a vector format so it would be suitable for print. The agency operated a 2 colour press which I learned on the job to operate from outputting artwork for pre-press, to making plates and then operating the press!

With no formal qualifications being available in the local area for Graphic Design, I completed select units through Southern Cross University's Bachelor of Arts course and this was incorporated into a "Small Business Operations Traineeship" program (yes you read correct!) which I was employed under in the first 12 months on the job. With the bulk of training learned on the job over the following years, I developed the skill set necessary to get what was in my head onto the screen.

Affordable full colour printing was in it's early days and creating tourist brochures for the many attractions and tour operators in the Coffs Coast region was a large part of the business. If you looked at a tourist brochure rack around Coffs Harbour in the early 2000's, I had either designed or had been involved with around 75% of the tourist brochures in the marketplace.

My first website was built in circa 2002 for the design agency I worked for. This was when only a handful of businesses even had a website! Yahoo and Excite were the dominant search engines back then before Google became the powerhouse it is today. The web design software back then was by Adobe GoLive or Dreamweaver which was then owned by Macromedia before Adobe acquired it in 2006.

After a few years, my creativity had blossomed into a powerhouse in the local area and I had a reputation as the "go-to" person for any full colour design work. I progressed through the business to become the senior designer and was involved in new acquisitions the agency took on such as "Coastal Dining Guide", "Coastal Homes & Lifestyle" and a monthly colour publication launched titled "Verve".

Unfortunately the agency I was employed by closed it's doors for a variety of factors (those magazine print runs are expensive!) and I continued working in the trade by taking on freelance design from the many local contacts I had built up over the past 8 years.

Visiting a restaurant client one evening about a menu redesign, I heard that the restaurant owner was moving a few doors up the street on the famous Jetty Strip in Coffs Harbour and that the lease was available. Barista duties had been a weekend staple for the past few years in conjunction with my full time role as a designer so after a discussion with my father, Urban Espresso Lounge was born and yes the logo still looks as fresh 12 years later as what it did back then!

An energy sapping schedule was set and the cafe was fitout and opened to the public within 3 weeks. Everything from painting, purchasing tables, chairs, coffee machine and grinders, refrigeration, cutlery, crockery, glassware, menu creation & design, construction of bars and counters, advertising, liquor licensing, hiring staff was undertaken and project managed. After an extended period of tortuous hours (minimum 12 - 18 hour days 7 days a week), significant weight loss and a whole heap of stress, I decided to put the cafe on the market and within 6 weeks it had sold and settled!

I moved to Melbourne where I took on a role with Nestle Australia and quickly moved through different roles climbing the corporate ladder before moving with the company to Perth for a few years and then later to Sydney.

Needing a change from the hectic pace of Sydney life, Nicola and I moved back to the Coffs Coast where we settled in a small lifestyle acreage  property in the Orara Valley (you may even see us on Dream Gardens on the ABC in 2019).

I started a small apparel label in 2015 to quench my artistic thirst without constraint, "Catalyst Machine" was formed and targeted around the custom motorcycle scene and lifestyle. It's awesome to see a complete stranger walking around wearing a t-shirt you designed! This took me down the path of setting up an e-commerce business and learning the most effective ways of marketing a predominantly online business.

Throughout all of my movements throughout the country, I continued to hone my design skills in a freelance capacity and I still continues to look after clients from these locations.

the present.

I use my experience in both small business and in multi-national corporations to assist clients in creating a brand that they can be proud of and to attract their ideal client.

I understand that not every business has an unlimited budget to create their marketing collateral so I use my knowledge of creating brand and product awareness to assist clients by recommending where they should put their budget to build a foundation that they can use to expand on in future as their business grows. As an example, we won't recommend that you rebuild your entire website if there are areas where your current marketing does not have reach. We would rather help you get the basics right and give yourself a great base to expand upon in future and grow together successfully.

I have often heard the comment "all of your design work looks so different from one business to the next". This statement is so true. Your logo and brand need to look different if you are trying to attract a 20 year old male compared to a 60 year old female. It also needs to suit your personality and to suit the industry type.

I have often found that the first business of it's type in an area who make their brand and all associated collateral such as website, social media and marketing look like "a million bucks", will always attract a range of new customers and generate strong brand awareness. This also goes for long established businesses. When you make a change or "reinvent" yourself, you attract a whole new set of customers.

where it started.

Where do I begin!  My working life has been long and varied and somehow it has all accumulated to bring me to where I am today – heading up Social Media Management at Outspoken Entourage.

My creativity has always been there – as a child I devoured books and began to dabble in writing poetry and short, creative stories. Maybe a little TOO creative but I enjoyed being able to be as wild and wacky as I wanted!

But I think it all REALLY started when I was running Kid Nation – a national modelling agency for children, where I was considered a ‘pioneer’ by posting daily on Facebook to communicate and inform the talent and their parents of the happenings within the agency.  The agency amassed a large organic following, which, over time, converted to dollars in the bank.

After meeting Mark, I sold the business and we moved to Sydney, where my previous experience managing talent earnt me a role supporting speakers from all over Australia.  And eventually, landing in Coffs Harbour, I continued to work with speakers, looking after their bookings, marketing, social media, travel, database creation and more.   Being able to quickly adapt to learning the ropes of their businesses meant I was able to provide solid advice with regard to growing the business, through various avenues including sales, marketing AND social media.

where to from here.

Which brings me to where I am today. Creating content (somewhere in the vicinity of 500 posts per month – eeek!) for all of Outspoken Entourage’s clients and having a lot of fun whilst doing it. Getting to learn about your business and helping it grow through social engagement really floats my boat.

If you’ve got time for a coffee, but no time to invest in social media, hit me up! Who knows what great plans we can devise when caffeine is involved ;-)
